Historical Map J. Wild (~1850)
Description
In the autumn of 1842, the Zurich Grand Council decided to have a map of the canton of Zurich drawn up. In the period from 1843 to 1851, under the direction of Johannes Wild from Richterswil, 27 original measuring table sheets were created in the scale 1:25000. The four-coloured wild card was divided into 30 single sheets with a leaf size of 48 x 30 cm or 12'000 m x 7 500 m. The importance of colors — Black was chosen for the villages and single buildings, for roads and paths, for the borders of the canton, districts, parishes, vines and forest, as well as for the names (communal names, hall names, etc.) and the numbers of highlights. All residential buildings were depicted by black surfaces, but uninhabited with outline lines. — In blue color, lakes, rivers, streams and canals, depending on their meaning, are represented with one or two lines. A fine blue paralell hatching symbolises Riede, swamps and peat bogs. — Pale green shades all forest areas. — Braun was used for the first time representation of the terrain using height curves. The aequi distance (vertical distance of the altitude curves) is 10 m.
