ZNIEFF marine type 1 in Guyana – 2015
Description
ZNIEFF are Natural Zones of Ecological, Floristic and Faunistic Interest. The sectors that may be affected cover the entire national, land, river and marine territory. They must be of particular ecological interest, in particular because of the balance or richness of the ecosystems they constitute, the presence of rare and endangered plant or animal species.
There are 2 types of ZNIEFF:
— type I ZNIEFF: areas of high biological or ecological interest;
— type II ZNIEFF: large natural ensembles rich and little modified, offering important biological potentialities.
The inventory of the ZNIEFF for the marine domain was launched by the Ministry of the Environment in metropolitan France in 1990, and was extended to overseas in 1995, integrating the specificities of the tropical marine environment.
