NVDB Functional Road Class

Description

Functional road class means a classification of the road network based on the importance of a road for the connectivity of the overall road network. Classes 0 to 9, where Class 0 are the main roads and Class 9 the least important roads. The classification is general for all types of traffic. The purpose of Functional Road Class is to create a hierarchical classification of traffic management roads, based on the importance of a road for the overall road network connectivity. The purpose of the classification is to lead traffic from a worse to a better road network. It is done on the basis of the functioning of the roads in the total road network. The classification can be used as an important parameter for automated route selection calculations. Often such calculations are also based on other parameters such as traffic rules and physical restrictions. In the system of road selection calculations, it is important to “find” a road with as “good” functional road class as possible as quickly as possible. Good in this context means as low a class as possible on the scale 0-9 where 0 is the best.
