Accumulation of pressures that can cause the entry of marine litter from land in the Levantine-Balear Demarcation (EM LEVA PRE Terrestrial Garbage)
Description
Para caracterizar la basura marina de origen terrestre como presión, se han identificado las siguientes fuentes: coastal towns, ports, bathing areas, municipal solid waste dumps and rivers.
First, all cells located less than 10 km from identified garbage sources have been selected. Then it has been added to each cell:
- The population associated with the population centers located within a radius of 10 km.
- The area of ports within a radius of 10 km.
- The tourist population associated with bathing areas, assuming an average of 10,000 inhabitants / km of coastline in the coastal areas of the Demarcation.
- The presence/absence of a landfill (layer of selected landfills less than 2 km from the coast)
- The presence/absence of a river mouth
Then the population and area values have been transformed on a scale of 1-3. In the case of ports, the surface values have not been used directly, but the following index has been calculated for each cell:
Ports = [Sum surface ports] + ([Cell surface] / [Buffer surface 10 km cell])
In this way, the following scale has been followed:
1 Ports: 0-1; Population Cores: under 50,000; Tourist population: under 50,000
2 Ports: 1-10; Population nuclei: 50,000-300,000; Tourist population: 50,000-200,000
3 Ports: Major 10; Population nuclei: greater than 300,000; Tourist population: Major 200,000
Finally, the resulting values have been added, as well as the presence/absence of landfills and river mouths (values 0/1). The final values range from 1-10:
Very High: 9 to 10
High: 7 to 8
Medium: 5 to 6
Low: 3 to 4
Very Low: 0 to 2
