Description
In Roman times (2000 to 1500 years ago) the Old Rhine formed the border (Limes) of the Roman Empire. On the south bank of the Old Rhine, the Romans built a road with forts. Archaeologists call this border the 'Limeszone'. Remains of it have been found in many places during excavations. Another important linear object is the Corbulo Canal, a waterway dug by the Romans that connected the Old Rhine with the Helinium, the mouth of the Meuse.
