Reservations of protected species
Description
Species protection requirements in Latvia are laid down in the Law on the Conservation of Species and Habitats (adopted by the Saeima on 16 March 2000), which is based on Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora and Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds. In accordance with this Law, lists of specially protected species have been drawn up, which include endangered, endangered or rare species and species inhabiting specific habitats (http://likumi.lv/doc.php?id=12821). This list includes both species traditionally protected in Latvia and species protected under the EU Birds or Habitats Directives. The list of specially protected species in Latvia includes 723 plant and animal species, the list has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
