Description
This grid file contains information about the Pleistocene deposits in Overijssel. It includes the archaeological regions of Drents Zandgebied and Overijssels-Gelders Zandgebied. As these names indicate, these are mainly sandy deposits. In addition, there are also local river deposits, mainly along the IJssel. The Pleistocene deposits were deposited between 2,500,000 and 10,000 years ago by water, wind and ice. Because the vast majority of the habitation history of Hoog Nederland is younger than 13,000 years, most archaeological remains lie on the surface or just below the surface. In combination with the Indicative Map of Archaeological Values (IKAW), this file can be used in an inventory study on the conservation of archaeological values. It can also be used in some cases for studies of historical, geographical and geologic values. It can also be used for advice on archaeological (field) research.
