RegioStaR - Regional Statistical Space Typing

Description

With the regional statistical spatial typology (RegioStaR), the BMDV has designed a spatial typology of settlement structure because existing spatial typologies could not meet the requirements for the needs of transport and mobility research and policy; However, it is also suitable for questions from other disciplines. With the support of the BBSR, the types were determined empirically at the level of the municipalities/associated municipalities/municipal associations. Through the hierarchical structure, RegioStaR enables local and regional considerations. The design took into account important requirements for scientific analysis and political interpretation: 1. definition of the central local function of cities that is as comparable as possible throughout Germany, 2. temporal stability of the types in order to also be able to map temporal developments, and 3. a population distribution suitable for sample surveys. The typology ranges from a "regional type" differentiated in urban regions and rural regions to a "regional type" differentiated in four types and ultimately into 17 "regional statistical spatial types". These 17 room types form the core of regional statistical room typology and are the basis for further summaries in room and community types. Administrative reforms change the number and size of municipalities. Here the reference data for different territorial estates are available (from the territorial estate 2015 onwards). Annually in November/December an update to the area status as at 31.12. of the previous year takes place. The reference files are also stored in the Federal Statistical Office and can be used there for (special) evaluations in all statistical areas. The current territorial status is as at 31.12.2022.
