Main structure: Historic vegetable gardens on estates (heritage line)
Description
This map shows where vegetable gardens, or parts of them (such as garden or fruit walls and cold bins) are still present in the Estates Zone. Many of the vegetable gardens in the country estates are still partly enclosed by fruit walls, against which slate fruit grew extra well due to the heat of the sun on the wall. A special feature is the large number of experimental fruit walls in the Estates Zone, which were mostly built in the 18th century. Straight garden walls can be found in many more places and have been laid out regularly until much more recently.
