Map of the wind erosion hazard of soils
Description
Soil erosion by wind occurs in particular on sandy, uncovered soils that have dried up on the ground surface. In addition, wind erosion is favored by the lack of wind barriers in the landscape (e.g. hedges and forests).
According to DIN 19706, the site-dependent erosion hazard of a vegetation-free and dry soil is assessed depending on the soil type and the annual mean of wind speed.
First, the erodibility of the dry fine soil is determined by wind. This is mainly based on the grain size composition. Dry fine sands have the highest erodibility. Subsequently, the regionalised annual mean of wind speed is used to evaluate the potential for hazards in combination with erodibility.
