Description
A water area is the administrative division for the management of water and watercourses, including groundwater bodies and coastal marine areas. The water area is a subdivision under the water region. Several water areas make up a water region.
The classification is based on subdivision criteria from the Water Framework Directive, which implements the Water Framework Directive. Norway is divided into a total of 105 water areas. The water area boundaries do not follow exact municipal boundaries nor do the exact catchments.
In most water areas, a water area coordinator is employed in a splicing team between the municipalities involved, the county authorities and the state. The work in the water areas shall ensure the participation of the municipalities and local participation, coordinate between the municipalities and make them good for water management, and lay the foundation for the regional work on water management plans and associated programmes of action.
Measurement data on state and development within water regions and water areas are compiled to see state and development over time.
