Map of shadows made by the Archaeological Ensemble of Carmona

Description

In 2005 it was decided to undertake an extensive project to complete all the archaeological record that was missing on the ground, digitise all the existing documentation and design a computer tool suitable to manage this volume of data and capable of generating the new documents required by the management of the CCS, both of an archaeological nature, as well as related to the conservation or study of the visiting public. In the case of the graphic and planimetric information of the funerary complexes, features in the terrain of archaeological interest (footprints of the superstructure of the hypogeous funerary complexes) and amphitheatre, the 3d scanner was chosen, and it was necessary to do it of all the known elements. A new cartographic base has been created with level curves obtained by photogrammetry of the flight carried out ex profeso for this project in 2010. Aerial photography has been used to obtain a high resolution orthophotography, 5 cm/pixel, from which a Digital Terrestrial Model (BAT) has been generated by photogrammetric correlation, which serves as a support for geographical analysis with GIS tools. The integration of this MDT and the 3d scans is distributed by means of a geographical information system, on a basis of free software (gvSIG and MapServer), which agglutinates it taking as a reference the funerary complexes (tumbas), significant surface structures (e.g. ustrin) and both ancient buildings (the amphitheatre), as well as modern (the site museum). They have been linked to all the databases that were kept, as well as other documentation, including the 3d models and the fact sheets of the archaeological record system. In this way, all the documentary information was geographically located, linking it fundamentally to the funerary complexes. This tool, in addition to managing the digitised historical planimetry, develops new thematic information from the existing one and allows the use of information accessible by Web Map Service (WMS). The result of this work is translated into the map of shadows elaborated by the Archaeological Ensemble of Carmona.
