In 2023, with 61 640 new French nationals, the annual flow of acquisitions of French nationality fell by 21.7%. The decline in activity in 2023 must be analyzed through technical difficulties related to the dematerialization of the naturalization procedure and its deployment, in 2023, throughout the national territory. A fluidification of the system and a catch-up are expected for 2024. After a year 2020 under the effect of the pandemic crisis, the year 2021 had been particularly dynamic, in connection with the recovery of activity, the catching-up effect and the implementation of the system of recognition of the commitment of foreigners on the "front line" during the Covid-19 crisis. In counterpoint, a return to usual levels was noted in 2022. The decline in 2023 was driven by acquisitions by decree, which recorded a marked decrease of 33.8%, mitigated by an increase in acquisitions by declarative means (+ 18.8%), mainly due to the spouse of French. Acquisitions on the basis of marriage are up 18.2% but do not yet return to pre-health crisis levels. The two methods of acquisition by declaration created from July 18, 2016 for the benefit of the ascendants of French and the brothers or sisters of French, much less numerous, also continue their increase (+ 25.5%). It should be noted that in addition to these modes of acquisition of French nationality, there are other access routes followed by the Ministry of Justice, for which data for the year 2023 are not yet available. In general, these other routes account for about one-third of total acquisitions over the year. Statistics on the set of nationality acquisitions in 2023 will be published in June 2024.
