National celebrations and commemorations in France since 1970
Description
Beginning in the 1970s, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs supported demonstrations celebrating illustrious figures or events in the history of France. A delegation to national celebrations was created in 1974 under the leadership of Minister of Cultural Affairs Maurice Druon. Initially reporting to the French Association for National Celebrations, the delegation was attached to the French Archives Directorate in 1979. The mission of establishing and piloting the annual celebrations (then “memorations”) was assigned to a “High Committee of National Commemorations” in 1999. The commemoration of Charles Maurras in the commemorations in 2018 sparks controversy, following which the high committee resigns. Since 2022, commemorations have been attached to the Institut de France, via the France Mémoire service.
Until the early 1980s, the delegation of national celebrations supported initiatives of institutions and communities (exhibitions, colloquiums, concerts, publishing books and stamps), notably through grants.
A leaflet listing the celebrations is distributed for 1985. From 1986 to 2018, an annual collection was published under the direction of the French Archives Directorate and then the Interministerial Service of Archives of France. These books contain a list of celebrated events and personalities, accompanied by written articles, as well as a list of anniversaries reported for information purposes.
The dataset made available lists the dates “officially” celebrated, from the following different sources:
— 1970 to 1984: no “official list”; certain events are sufficiently significant to be mentioned in the annual activity reports of the French Archives Directorate, and to be included in the files filed with the National Archives (payment 20000426). The celebrations of this period are therefore not exhaustive but have nevertheless been taken into account in the dataset;
— 1985: leaflet edited by the French Archives Directorate;
— 1986 to 2018: summaries of the collections published each year. The lists of anniversaries given for information purposes have not been retained. The books can be consulted in PDF in the archives.org website (see column _comment_) and partly on FranceArchives for the period 1999-2008 ([History pages](https://francearchives.gouv.fr/fr/section/44276));
— 2022 to 2024: official lists distributed by [France Mémoire](https://www.france-memoire.fr/).
The dataset consists of the following fields:
— annee_commemoration: year in which the event was celebrated (according to the sources);
— entitled: event title (based on sources);
— year_event: year of the event celebrated (according to the sources);
— thematic_commemoration: theme of the event celebrated where appropriate (according to the sources);
— individual: identity of the individual celebrated with his/her Wikidata ID. Potentially multivalued field, with the | separator (personal addition);
— indexation: thematic indexation of the event. Potentially multivalued field, with the | separator (personal addition);
— type_event: indexation of the type of event (birth, death, event, creation) (personal addition);
— source_dataset: source of information (personal addition);
— comment: possible link to the online resource (personal addition).
