Monitoring of Sars-Cov-2 in wastewater (SUM'Water)

Description

A national wastewater monitoring system (**SUM’Eau**) was initiated under the leadership of the Directorate-General for Health (Ministry of Health) and the Directorate for Water and Biodiversity (Ministry of Ecology) with the technical and scientific support of the health agencies (Public Health France, National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Security). Wastewater monitoring has two objectives, which are (1) to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 genome in the general population at an early stage and (2) to monitor trends in viral circulation within the population. The data proposed make it possible to estimate the trend of circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in wastewater in 12 local authorities: Dijon, Grenoble, Lille, Marseille, Nancy, Orléans, Paris, Pau, Rennes, Rouen, Toulouse. **The SARS-CoV-2 monitoring indicators in wastewater are calculated from the ratio of SARS-CoV-2 viral concentration (expressed in cg/L and quantified from gene E) to ammoniacal nitrogen concentration (expressed in mg N/L).** The data obtained are then smoothed using the LOESS regression method. This smoothing may explain a variation in the previous measurements on a new delivery. These data are updated on a **weekly** basis. >[06/03/2024]. The monitoring network evolved from week 08 of 2024. Thus, it is now the Lille-Marquette-Lez-Lille station – and no longer the Roubaix-Wattrelos station – that is now followed at the level of the Lille agglomeration. A column has been added to the indicator file. The station file has also been updated accordingly. >[17/01/2024]. A patch has been made to the SUM’EAU data processing script. This fix corrects an error that occurred in the smoothing calculation during the year change. >[20/12/2023]. A correction has been made to the values of the national indicator following a confusion on the identification of the station followed within the metropolis of Lille. It is indeed the Roubaix-Wattrelos station that has been monitored since week 30 of 2022 and not the Lille-Marquette-Lez-Lille station. This confusion does not change the values of the station indicator itself (the population size is not used in this framework) but has an impact on the values of the national indicator which uses an average weighted by the population size of each station. However, the impact on trend monitoring is negligible as population sizes are of the same order of magnitude. All the values of the national indicator have thus been recalculated. **Two files** are available and the correspondence between these two files is ensured by the name of the STEU. - `sumeau_stations.csv` : This file is a repository of information on wastewater treatment plants (**STEU**) monitored under SUM’Eau. The proposed data (name of the STEU, name of the main municipality, geolocation of the STEU according to the 1984 World Geodetic System) are mainly from the Urban Residual Waters Database (BDD ERU), 2021 vintage, managed by [the Ministry in charge of ecology] (https://www.assainissement.developpement-durable.gouv.fr/PortailAC/). The unique code assigned to each STEU refers in particular to the repository developed by the Service d'administration nationale des données et référentiels sur l'eau (Sandre). The population size, used for the construction of the overall indicator (see below), is an estimate made in conjunction with the STEU operators. `name` = name of the STEU; `municipality` = main municipality covered by the STEU; `sandre` = STEU code according to the Sandre reference system; `population` = estimate of the population size of the basin connected to the wastewater treatment plant where the sampling was carried out; `longitude` = longitude of the STEU. `latitude` = latitude of the STEU; - `sumeau_indicators.csv` : This second file is the return file of SARS-CoV-2 monitoring indicators in wastewater. The first column corresponds to the sampling week. The following columns correspond to the different STEUs followed. Thus, each line corresponds to the values of the SARS-CoV-2 monitoring indicator in wastewater obtained for each of the stations monitored for the week in question. A missing value (NA) reflects the absence of data for a given station and week. The last column (National) corresponds to the overall national indicator; this is calculated as the average of the indicators of the different WWTPs monitored, weighted by the population size connected to the different monitored sites.
