Traces of heating and cooling networks

In order to contribute to the development of district heating and cooling networks, which are one of the levers for the decarbonisation of buildings and the acceleration of the energy transition, France Chaleur Urbaine makes the network paths identified in the service, i.e. 826 paths to date, and the associated data freely available for download. The downloadable file includes the following elements:

• Traces of networks: the routes of the networks have been collected by France Chaleur Urbaine from local authorities and operators and are continuously updated.

• Untracked networks: this layer identifies district heating and cooling networks whose layout is not yet available on France Chaleur Urbaine (based on the annual survey of district heating and cooling networks for 2022). They are represented by a point located at the centroid of the municipality concerned.

• Network ID: national network identifier.

• Heat networks under construction: information transmitted by local authorities and operators or by ADEME (trace or zone for networks whose route is still subject to change).

• Classified networks: the information is based on the Decree of 23 December 2022 on the classification of district heating and cooling networks, which lists the networks concerned by the automatic classification. When the community deliberated to oppose the classification and informed France Chaleur Urbaine, this information was taken into account.

• Priority Development Perimeter (PDP): the priority development areas of the classified networks are collected by France Chaleur Urbaine from local authorities.

• Renewable energy and recovery rates, CO2 content, CO2 content LCA (variable R&R rates, CO2 and CO2 LCA): these data are taken from the Order of 5 July 2024, known as the ‘DPE Order’. They are drawn up on the basis of the annual survey of district heating and cooling networks carried out by the SNCU, and cover 2022 or, for certain networks, an average of 2020-2021-2022. The R&R rate is in %. The CO2 content is in kgCO2/kWh. LCA content (in life cycle analysis) includes both direct and indirect emissions.

• Other technical and economic data: All the data are extracted from the surveys carried out by Fedene Réseaux de chaleur et de froid with the help of the AMORCE association, under the supervision of the Department of Data and Statistical Studies (SDES) of the Ministry of Ecological Transition. The year considered varies according to the current availability of data. Production, power and deliveries: 2023 (data made open data by SDES). Economic data: 2022 (FEDENE data library). Length and heat transfer fluid: 2021.
