Description

**Context for the production of the dataset:** This publication is made as part of a call for comments on the dataset. We seek to capture: 1. Your remarks and potential corrections 2. Your proposals for improvement We also consider the extension of the opening perimeter; for example: international telephone codes, cities, translation into UN languages, historisation, etc. **Precautions for use: ** This list of countries and territories of the world was drawn up in the first half of 2023. It aims to link the main references of the same nature published in French by reference French public bodies (official geographical code of INSEE) and international institutions (UN, ISO, International Telecommunication Union). Entities recognised as such by France shall be considered sovereign States. Other entities are referred to as belonging to a sovereign State if so. Some entities are not attached to any sovereign State when their status or guardianship is contested or indefinite. The list thus drawn does not define a political or geographical partitioning of the world. In addition to territorial disputes that maintain uncertainty as to the administrative attachment of certain right-of-way, some territories may refer to several different entries on the list. Indeed, the repositories taken into account can qualify as several distinct names in the same territory. Thus, the Spanish Provinces of Africa (name appearing in the official geographical code of INSEE) can be considered to include the Canary Islands and the Presidents. Where, in the reference denominations, the wording of a territory includes several geographical names (toponyms) separated by “and” or by a comma, each of these names corresponds to a separate entry in the list, with the exception of entities for which the coordination conjunction is integrated into the toponym (e.g. Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), which results in the presence of hyphen on both sides of the coordination conjunction. Discrepancies between referentials lead to the duplication of certain headings as well as the presence of empty values.
