Description

Provision D29 of SDAGE 2022-2027: Definition of aquatic and wetland environments with high environmental challenges Rivers in very good ecological status Within the meaning of Article L. 214 17 1 of the Environmental Code A watercourse, or a portion of a watercourse, shall be considered to be ‘very good ecological status’ by reference to Annex II to the WFD (characterisation of types of surface water bodies), if it has at least one of the criteria reflecting a sufficient level of ecological preservation: — absence or near absence of disturbance of hydromorphological functioning, — presence of one or more remarkable species directly infeoded in the watercourse. Streams or portions of watercourses thus identified in very good ecological status, are most often home to determinant species and generally act as a biological reservoir. They rarely coincide with the delimitation of water bodies and are for almost all located at the head of the basin Biological reservoirs Biological reservoirs, within the meaning of Article L. 214-17 of the Environmental Code, are rivers or parts of rivers or canals that comprise one or more areas of reproduction or habitat of aquatic species and allow their distribution in one or more watercourses in the watershed. They are necessary to maintain or achieve good ecological status of watercourses in a watershed (Article R. 214-108 of the Environmental Code). They act as a shelter in the event of temporary disturbances, in particular due to the evolution of the regime and therma of rivers. They are heavily involved in the resilience of the environment and the mitigation of the effects of climate change.
