Medically trained; employment position, position in employment, 1999-2017
Description
This table shows the number of medically skilled workers according to their employment position and employment position in a reporting year. “Medically trained” means here: certified healthcare providers who are registered in the BIG register (Occupations in Health Care) and are part of the BRP population (BasisRegistratie Personen) or are employed in the Netherlands. Medical professions or positions not included in the BIG register are not included in this table either. The creation of the BIG register is a task resulting from the BIG Act (Act on the Occupations in Individual Health Care). The BIG register provides clarity about the competence of a healthcare provider. The medical professionals are divided into a number of professions, including the specialisms per profession, on the basis of the BIG register. The table shows four topics: the employment position, the position in the workplace, the number of workplaces per person, and the part-time factor of the medically skilled active as an employee. The figures are broken down by age and gender. Medical professionals can have multiple competences. As a result, the sum of the detail data may differ from the total.
In 2014, there was a sharp decline in the number of registered nurses, midwives and physiotherapists in the BIG register. This is due to mandatory re-registration and stricter work experience requirements.
In 2017, there was a decrease in the number of registered dentists, pharmacists, healthcare psychologists and psychotherapists due to mandatory re-registration.

Status of the figures:
The figures in this table are final, with the exception of 2017; these are for now. As this table has been discontinued, the figures for 2017 are no longer definitive. The current rate in a reporting year is from 2012 the last Friday before Christmas. For previous reporting years, the benchmark is the last Friday in September.

When are new figures coming?
This table has been discontinued and followed up by a new time series table with figures from 1999 onwards (see paragraph 3). The new time series table differs in a number of points from the current time series table. In the new table, the part-time factor of the medically skilled workers has been omitted as an employee as a subject. In the case of the employment position, the non-workers are not further classified into categories (Arbeid incapacitated, Disbursement, Pension or No Income) and the sector classification of the workers in the care sector has been omitted.
There will also soon be 3 new tables on medical professionals by socioeconomic category (main source of income) and sector by age and gender, region, hours per week for employed persons with figures from 2013.
