‘Decision support layer. Diagnosis made by the water agency. The mobility space of a watercourse also known as “area of freedom” is defined as a major bed space in which the channel or river channels provide lateral translations allowing sediment mobilisation and optimum functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems (SDAGE RMC 1995). As the following diagram shows, this space is therefore quite different from the flood zone. For the management of aquatic environments, the preservation of this space is necessary for the proper functioning of the watercourse and its sedimentary balance. The establishment of appropriate management within the mobility space contributes to the achievement of the good condition of water bodies set by the Water Framework Directive.
