Remarkable landscapes of Burgundy-Franche-Comté

The DREAL Bourgogne-Franche-Comté wanted to undertake a study of remarkable landscapes on a regional scale, in order to better characterise them and locate them on the basis of an argumented and explained methodology, then in a second step to better understand the potential impacts of certain developments on these remarkable landscapes. The analysis and identification of remarkable landscapes integrates and goes beyond the scope of landscapes that can already be identified as remarkable due to their protective legal status or the labels they enjoy. This is the case in particular for classified sites, UNESCO sites of Opérations Grands Sites or labels Grands Sites de France. The study carried out at the regional level is not intended to replace landscape studies carried out at the departmental level. The identification of remarkable landscapes on a regional scale is a complementary contribution to departmental knowledge. The methods developed at the departmental level differ from that used in this regional study. The results on the identification and characterisation of remarkable landscapes at the scale of Burgundy-Franche-Comté constitute a knowledge base as well as potentially a tool to assist decision or instruction. The remarkable character of a landscape is at the crossroads of aesthetic and cognitive values and exceeds the mere affective value. It asserts itself by the social recognition of physical, natural, historical, architectural quality... that ordinary landscapes do not possess or reveal. Remarkable landscapes can integrate iconic landscapes, objects of protection and national recognition (listed sites, UNESCO properties, remarkable heritage sites...). Places that are too punctual in nature are not covered by this regional study. The landscapes noticed correspond to landscapes identified in one of the 3 fields of knowledge (landscape referents, regional bibliography and land surveying) or from workshops of exchanges with landscape referents. These landscapes, which are close to being remarkable, have at least one assessment criterion below the regional threshold covered by the analysis. They are presented by a synthesis of arguments comparable to remarkable landscapes to possibly motivate or support an approach of valorisation participating in their future regional recognition.
