Caves identified for INTEMARES-C1.4 campaigns

Description

The information contained in this data set is the set of caves considered to be part of the study on the impact of diving in caves of the LIC of the Canal de Menorca. They were obtained through questionnaires in diving centers operating in Mallorca and Menorca carried out between July and October 2019. This is the representation of the spatial distribution of the total area in which the different types of sampling were carried out by the scientific personnel on board. The area comprising the data provided covers a delimited area around the sampled caves located within the margins of the Menorca Canal SCI. It is a set of data composed of polygonal elements, where a polygon has been created that represents the approximate location of the caves that were obtained thanks to the surveys carried out in diving centers of Mallorca and Menorca. From these caves a smaller selection was made to sample in the campaigns of the project. Each object is associated with a series of alphanumeric variables such as the name of the cave, its location or if it is in the area covered by the LIC of the Menorca Canal. The development of this set of geographical information began in October 2019, thanks to field trips to carry out questionnaires in diving centers carried out between July and October of the same year. The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
