Description

The BK50 describes the distribution of the soils of Lower Saxony in high resolution and in the current state of knowledge. With the creation, numerous knowledge could be gained and old ones clarified. The aim is to present the complex interrelationships around the soil in a professionally correct, comprehensible and transparent manner for the specialist public and the laypersons. The BK50 is closely coordinated in terms of space and content with other maps or databases available throughout the country. A uniform set of rules ensures comparable quality throughout the country. With 13,000 legend units and 196,000 surfaces, the BK50 has a great depth of technical and spatial significance. It thus meets the requirements for medium-sized ground maps. The BK50 divides Lower Saxony into 6 soil regions, 13 large soil landscapes and further into soil landscapes. These land-based aggregation levels are gradually displayed on a scale-by-scale basis. From a scale of 1:128,000, the NIBIS map server displays the soil types of the BK50 and thus the smallest mapping units. The map is characterised, among other things, by a high spatial differentiation of soil types, an updated moorland distribution taking into account the earthing stages and peat succession soils of cultivated soils (e.g. deep upheaval, Plaggenesch, spittkultur soils, marsh hoof soil) and the designation of culturally historically significant areas and regional peculiarities (e.g. sausages, dike lines). With the systematic application of the top layer structure, shallow soils (rendzines, tendrils, shallow brown soils and para-brown soils) are described in a more precise and spatially differentiated manner. The soil map contains information on the guide soil shape and associated soil shapes and is differentiated in terms of use. With the usage differentiation, the characteristics, horizons and soil types are adapted to the respective uses. This affects, for example, the topsoil horizons, the humus layers under the forest, the groundwater levels and the information on wetting and, if necessary, soil erosion under arable land.
