Soil function assessment map - Rhein-Kreis Neuss WMS
Description
Soils are one of our essential livelihoods. They are habitat for humans, animals and plants and thus also the basis of human nutrition. They store water and nutrients that they provide to growing plants and convert dead organic substances into plant-available nutrients through soil organisms. Soils thus play a central role in global material cycles and thus also in the climate-relevant carbon cycle. In addition, soils protect the newly formed groundwater from contamination after infiltration of precipitation water and passage through the soil body through filtering and chemical-physical bonding, so that clean groundwater can be created, which feeds surface waters or can be treated as drinking water. Since soils can only develop or re-form very slowly (centurys to millennia) from the rock, the protection of existing soils from removal, sealing, compaction, etc. is a central human task. The legal basis for the protection of the diverse natural functions of soil in Germany is the Federal Soil Protection Act 1998 (BBodSchG §2(2)(1) and (2)) together with the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance, which was recently amended and will enter into force in August 2023. In recent years, the Lower Soil Protection Authority of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss has, with the support of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, produced large-scale soil function maps for soils used for agriculture and forestry.
