Description
The dataset contains a set of digitally color-changed sheets (for a better representation of the overall map) based on the scanned original sheets. These are the hand-drawn and hand-coloured leaves of the Michaeliskarte 1837-1843 1:25,000 with the area in hatch representation. The map was scanned as part of the 150th anniversary in 1999 and made available to the public in a variety of ways. The Michaelis map of the canton of Aargau was officially called "Trigonometric topographic map of the canton of Aargau 1:25'000 1837-1843". The reason for their creation was the planned 1:100,000 map of Switzerland, from which the so-called Dufour Atlas was created. The Prussian engineer and topographer Ernst Heinrich Michaelis received the order for the completion of the 1:25,000 map in 1837. Concerning the map contents, Michaelis received precise instructions from Dufour. These reflect the fact that the map should serve primarily military purposes: All the houses, barns, ladles or huts, churches, monasteries and chapels, the great walls, fortifications, roads of all classes, the dirt roads, footpaths from village to village, the lakes, ponds, swamps, rivers, streams, canals, ferries, bridges and fountains, forests and individual shrubs, vineyards, rocks, castle ruins, all these "objects" possibly with their name, and finally all the elevations and depressions of the soil according to their embankments compatible with the scale were to be taken up. We have little evidence of other forms of the cultural landscape of that time.
