A century of stations in the French rail network: in service, closed or missing
Description
From the 6442 stations present in the file of “trains operated or not” deposited on data.gouv (Source: https://www.data.gouv.fr/fr/datasets/gares-ferroviaires-de-tous-types-exploitees-ou-non/), several operations were carried out:
(1) Data verification: comparison of geographical coordinates and toponyms (where possible) which identified a small percentage of errors, but still a little more than a hundred (concluded on a few lines);
(2) confrontation with a file present on (resources.data.sncf.com), which further improves the reliability of the data;
(3) Enrichment with stations that are no longer in service on lines still in operation and especially those on lines that are no longer in service.
In total, approximately 12000 stations (estimated at 90 % of the actual total);
(4) an adaptation of the properties of the GeoJson format, and a systematic classification of stations by line number and in the ascending order of their KP (odometer point on this line).
(5) remains to be done: a posteriori comparison of the coordinates of stations and municipalities (ongoing), exploitation of the graph of connections (ongoing).
