The National Institute of Origin and Quality is a public administrative institution with civil personality, under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
By the Agricultural Guidance Act of 5 January 2006, INAO is responsible for implementing the French policy on products with official signs identifying origin and quality: designation of origin; PGI; red label; STG and organic agriculture.
The Paris-based Institute is based on 8 territorial units covering the entire metropolitan area.
