INSPIRE - BFD50 - INSPIRE - BFD50: Nitrate retention capacity

Description

INSPIRE version of the BFD50. The soil overview map in scale 1:50.000 (BK50) provides an overview of the distribution of soil and soil-forming substrates for the entire area of Rhineland-Palatinate. The near-surface subsurface is depicted to a depth of two metres. Due to the scale, the legend units of the soil map are composed of soil form societies (BFG), which are described via several use-differentiated soil forms (BF). The leading soil shape is the soil shape that has the largest area in a BFG. Its name is also the name of the BFG. The topics of the BFD50 can be downloaded at Download-Seite in INSPIRE-GML-Format. Documentation of methods:The transfer of nitrate with leachate is to be regarded as a decisive factor of a groundwater hazard. It increases with the leachate rate, which results mainly from the annual water balance surplus, and decreases with the duration of the water in the soil and the resulting increased nitrate deprivation by the plants. The residence time depends mainly on the field capacity, which is determined for the rootable soil space. The nitrate retention capacity increases in sites affected by congestion water due to potential denitrification and the longer retention time of the congestion water in the root space (increased deprivation by the plants). In clay-rich soils, which tend to form dry cracks, nitrate displacement can occur after prolonged dry periods despite high field capacity during precipitation events. Such soils (pelosols, Terrae Fuscae) are also taken into account when determining the nitrate retention capacity. Soils made of organogenic substrates are generally characterized by a high retention capacity. However, due to their increased mineralization potential, a hazard to groundwater (e.g. after melioration) cannot be ruled out. These locations are also marked separately. However, the increased mineralization potential is not taken into account in the classification.
