Surface water bodies

Description

A water body is a unit of water management planning as defined in the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). Water bodies and their catchment areas shall consist of water zones. A water body is an important and identifiable part of the water, which is determined for the purpose of monitoring the status of waters and maintaining and achieving the target water status. The procedures for the designation of water bodies are determined by the regulations laid down in the Waters Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No 67/02 and amendments). A surface water body is an important and identifiable part of surface waters with comparable geomorphological and geological characteristics that provide comparable conditions for the development and existence of biological elements. They are determined by the Rules on the designation and classification of surface water bodies (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 63/05 and amendments). Due to the different hydromorphological properties of surface waters, we distinguish several species (presented in the collection as an attribute of VRSTA) of surface water bodies: watercourses (V), lakes (J), coastal and territorial sea (M) and surface waters are also defined as artificial (UVT) and heavily modified water bodies (MPVT). Artificial water bodies (UVTs) are those surface waters that have been created as a result of human encroachment, and heavily modified water bodies (MPVTs) are those surface waters that have significantly altered properties due to physical changes caused by human activity. Independent surface water bodies — watercourses are defined for: —watercourses with a catchment area greater than 100 km², artificial channels longer than 3 km, and — water reservoirs on rivers greater than 0.5 km². Watercourses or parts thereof that do not meet the criteria (influences) shall be connected to the water bodies of the watercourses into which they flow. Surface water bodies — watercourses are represented by lines, wider water bodies of watercourses with polygons. Independent surface water bodies — lakes are defined for: — natural lakes with a surface area of more than 0.5 km², — water reservoirs on rivers and artificial lakes with a surface area greater than 0.5 km². Surface water bodies — lake and surface water bodies — the sea are represented by polygons.
