Inventories of the General Catalogue of Manuscripts

Description

**This dataset includes EAD XML inventories from the General Manuscript Catalogue (GMC).** ### Description of the General Manuscript Catalogue (GMC) The CGM includes the description of manuscripts and archives of public libraries, excluding BnF and higher education libraries. The CGM is one of three French online catalogues of manuscripts held in libraries, along with BnF Archives et Manuscripts (for the BnF) and Calames (for higher education institutions). After the initial loading, resulting from the retroconversion of the printed volumes of the General Catalogue of Manuscripts of French Public Libraries (CGMBPF), several institutions joined the CGM and participate in its enrichment. Since January 2019, the CGM is directly updated by the establishments, using the TapIR tool developed by the BnF. The location of several inventories is currently uncertain due to the age of the census, which began in the 19th century. These inventories are listed in the accompanying file as "To be completed" in the "Department" and "City" columns. ### Description of the dataset The CGM is presented as 1811 EAD XML files and a file corresponding to the EAD DTD archived as a 73 MB 7z file. Each file is named as follows: - A prefix: FRCGMBPF (inventories of the CGMBPF), FRCGMNOV (new inventories created with TapIR) or FRCGMSUP (supplements to the CGMBPF), - The CPR number of the institution of conservation, consisting of 9 digits (the first 2 digits correspond to the number of the department, the next 3 to the INSEE code of the municipality in which the equipment is located, the next 2 to the type of library, and the last 2 to the sequential number), - Inventory number within the institution. The letter at the end of a file lets you know if an inventory had to be split into several files, for size reasons. The files FRCGMBPF-693836101-01a to FRCGMBPF-693836101-01f correspond to a single inventory divided into 6 parts.
