Sampling Beam trawl INTEMARES_A4 Mud volcanoes of the Gulf of Cadiz

Description

The information contained in this data set corresponds to the samplings carried out with beam-trawl epibenthic trawl dredger (bou de bera) during the INTEMARES A4 CAD oceanographic campaign in the SCI of ‘Volcanes de mud del Golfo de Cádiz,’ carried out between 6 and 20 April 2021 and which is linked to subproject A4 of the project ‘Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management of the Natura 2000 Network in the Marine Environment (LIFE IP INTEMARES). The results will serve to improve and complete the characterization of the benthic communities of the sedimentary bottoms both in the Somero Field and in the Deep of the SCI. This is the representation of the spatial distribution of the different linear transects of sampling made by the beam-trawl dredger. The area comprising the data provided covers sedimentary bottoms of specific polygons (three), located within the SCI, and in which, within the same polygon, zones (three) were plotted in which a different gradient of bottom trawling activity (low, medium and high) was observed using Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data during the 2010-19 historical series. In total, 35 beam-trawls were performed: 27 beam-trawl dredgers in the Somero Field of the SCI (three transects were carried out in the 3 polygons and in each of the 3 areas with different bottom trawling activity); ii) 2 beam-trawl dredges in the Deep Field and iii) 6 beam-trawl dredges in the continental shelf area due to the fact that the oceanographic vessel must have approached the coast due to the bad weather prevailing on some days of the campaign (it will serve for the Marine Strategies monitoring program). It is a data set composed of linear elements, where each element represents the transect made by the beam-trawl dredger. Each object is associated with a series of alphanumeric variables such as the code of each transect, the name of the campaign in which the sampling was carried out, the date, time, depth, the coordinates UTM X and Y, the UTM area to which our study area belongs, the time and depth of tack of the dredge, the length traveled during the transect, the speed of the vessel as well as the time during which the beam-trawl was in contact with the seabed. A brief description of the fauna present in each dredge is also provided. The development of this set of geographical information began in April 2021 thanks to the INTEMARES A4 CAD oceanographic campaign. The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
