Groundwater age pilot project
Description
According to the objectives of the Water Framework Directive, good groundwater status must be achieved in quantitative and qualitative terms by 2015. The average dwell time (MVZ) of groundwater can be used as an indicator of how effective measures against groundwater pollution are. The aim of the pilot project is to provide a statistical overview of the MVZ in the highest groundwater level used. For this purpose, groundwater samples were taken at measuring points in Marchfeld, on the Parndorfer Platte, on the Traun Enns Platte and at four springs in Styria, up to four different methods of MVZ determination were used. The results show that the MVZ is usually longer than 10 to 15 years. Current measures to reduce groundwater pollution can therefore only be measured in these groundwater bodies after 2015.
