Peatlands of particular importance for breeding birds (valuable areas 2010, supplemented in 2013)

Description

The database provides an overview of the areas of value for breeding birds on carbon-rich soils (BHK50) and additional bog biotopes identified outside these soils in Lower Saxony.The assessment is based on the Red List of breeding birds at risk in Lower Saxony on the basis of the assessment levels "local" to "national importance" (cf. Informationsdienst Naturschutz Niedersachsen 2/2013). The most up-to-date data from a period of 5 years (depending on the data situation and processing status) were used for the assessment of an area from the data reported in the Lower Saxony bird species collection programme. However, the avifaunistic data reported via the Lower Saxony bird species collection programme are not systematically collected nationwide, but are voluntary and partly commissioned stock surveys. For undefined areas, there are no or insufficient numbers of breeding birds, so that no classification could be made. However, this does not mean that these areas are of no importance to the breeding bird fauna! For areas with the attribute ‘Open status’, there are also no or insufficient stock figures, so that no classification could be made. However, even in this case, this does not mean that the areas have no avifaunistic significance.The European bird protection areas receive a separate value in the evaluation of the breeding birds (EU SPA). For selected species, a special assessment was carried out in accordance with the updated assessment procedure. Areas with the indication ‘see 2006 assessment’ were classified as ‘open status’ in the 2010 assessment, as generally no data were available since 2005.
