Accumulation of pressures that may cause contaminants to enter the South Atlantic Demarcation (EM SUD PRE Contaminants)
Description
The cumulative pressure analysis has been carried out taking into account all polluting sources together. That is to say, no individual analysis has been carried out per pollutant, nor has it been taken into account whether the discharge is intentional or accidental, but the areas with the highest probability of contributions of polluting loads in the Demarcation have been identified. To do this, first a selection of cells of the 5x5 minute meshing has been made, based on the following criteria:
- Those containing a monobuoy
- Those containing an underwater well or hydrocarbon platform
- Those that are less than 500 m from an authorized place for the discharge of dredging material
- Those that coincide with EMEP cells with higher loads of hazardous substances (those that add up to 50% of the total dioxin contamination and 25% by heavy metals, starting from the highest to the lowest sum)
- Those that are less than 5 km from a complex of the PRTR register that has no obligation to report.
- Those that are less than 2 km from the mouth of a river
- Those less than 2 km from municipal solid waste landfills
- Those that are less than 5 km from mining operations greater than 100 Ha
- Those that are less than 2 km from sewage treatment plants without obligation to inform according to the PRTR regulation
- Those that are less than 2 km from a port without traffic of dangerous goods
- Those less than 5 km from complexes in the PRTR register with an obligation to report (includes industrial installations and sewage treatment plants)
- Those that are less than 2 km from some transitional water body with poor chemical status
- Those that are less than 2 km from the river whose loads are reported to the OSPAR agreement (those that add up to 85% of the total pollutant load for the Spanish OSPAR zone have been selected, starting the sum from highest to lowest, for each of the elements)
- Those less than 2 km from a transitional river or body of water that does not meet the chemical status (as indicated in the river basin plans)
- Those that are less than 5 km from a port with dangerous goods traffic
- Those that overlap with a coastal water body that does not comply with chemical status (as indicated in the river basin plans)
Once all the elements have been integrated, the index has been calculated using the following formula:
POLLUTION INDEX = 0.1*[monobuoys + platforms] + 0.25*[Dregged material landfills + atmospheric depositions with high concentrations of metals or POPs + industrial facilities reporting to the PRTR but without obligation to report + WWTPs not reporting to the PRTR + river mouths + landfills + mines] + 0.5* [ports not carrying dangerous goods] + 0.75*[rivers poor chemical status or tw poor chemical status + PRTR complexes reported + OSPAR rivers with high loads] + 1*[cw poor chemical status + dangerous goods ports]
The result is a mesh of probabilities of entry of loads of dangerous substances that can therefore indicate areas with potential risk of contamination. It is divided according to the following intervals:
Very High: Major 3,25 / High: 2.25 to 3.25 / Medium: 1 to 2.25 / Low: 0.35 to 1 / Very Low: minor 0.35
