Iroise Biosphere Reserve (MAB)
Description
The Biosphere Reserve of the Iles and Sea of Iroise consists of 3 inhabited islands (Ouessant, Sein and Molène), as well as the archipelago of Molène consisting of about twenty islets, and the marine parts between the islands.
The main ecosystems of the Atlantic biogeographical domain (isular, coastal and marine) are represented: the marine environment, the foreshore, the cliffs with vegetation of the Atlantic coasts, the heathlands, the meadows.
On land and at sea, island communities have developed and maintained an original culture. Its exceptional landscapes and biodiversity make it a privileged destination for research, tourism and artistic creation.
Coordination structures: Regional Natural Park of Armorique and Marine Natural Park of Iroise
Located within the boundaries of the Armorique Regional Natural Park, the Biosphere Reserve has been coordinated by this structure since its creation in 1988.
The renewal of the MAB designation made it possible to redefine the project of its territory and its way of management. The maintenance of year-round populations on the islands, the development of sustainable activities that respect the environment and resources, the preservation of ecosystems and the transmission of heritage are at the heart of the project of the new Biosphere Reserve.
