Breeding birds - valuable areas 2010 (complemented in 2013)

Description

This digital map provides an overview of avifaunistically valuable areas for breeding birds in Lower Saxony. Avifauna is the totality of all bird species found in a region. The avifaunistic data available to the Nature Conservation Authority are assessed on a site-by-site basis. This assessment shall be carried out separately for breeding and guest birds in accordance with standardised assessment procedures. Data from 2005 to 2009 were evaluated on the basis of the evaluation system for breeding bird habitats applied in Lower Saxony (Information Service 6/97) on the basis of the Red List of breeding birds at risk in Lower Saxony and Bremen 7. Version as of 2007 (Info Service 3/2007;). The most up-to-date data from a period of 5 years (depending on the data situation and processing status) were used for the assessment of an area from the data reported in the Lower Saxony bird species collection programme. As part of the Lower Saxony bird species collection programme, no nationwide regular mapping is carried out, but rather a data collection of voluntary and partly commissioned stock collections. For undefined areas, there are no or insufficient numbers of breeding birds, so that no classification could be made. However, this does not mean that these areas are of no importance to the breeding bird fauna! For areas with the attribute ‘Open status’, there are also no or insufficient stock figures, so that no classification could be made. However, even in this case, this does not mean that the areas have no avifaunistic meaning. The European bird protection areas receive a separate value for the evaluation of breeding birds (EU SPAs). For selected species, a special assessment was carried out in accordance with the updated assessment procedure. Areas with the indication ‘see 2006 assessment’ were classified as ‘open status’ in the 2010 assessment, as generally no data were available since 2005. In line with the precautionary principle, the 2006 evaluation should then be used.
