The social situation as seen by the French: the shock of the 2008 crisis is fading

According to the 2016 DREES Opinion Barometer, three quarters of French people consider themselves to be in good health, but almost half believe that the state of health of French people has deteriorated. As in 2015, 8 out of 10 people believe that society is unfair, and 9 out of 10 believe that poverty and exclusion will continue to rise.
However, with the remoteness of the 2008 crisis, the pessimism of the French towards the state of French society diminished. However, this finding differs according to the geographical location of the respondents. In contrast to the inhabitants of the periphery of the major urban centres, those of the centres have a more positive view of the level of social cohesion or the meritocratic character of society.
On the other hand, the French are less in favour of restricting social benefits to contributors only and a fifth wants the introduction of a universal income. Despite this support for existing social benefits, eight out of ten respondents believe that many people do not benefit from the rights or allowances to which they are entitled, mainly due to a lack of information.
