RFC 2141, URN, Uniform resource name – generic syntax
Description
A URN can be assigned to a document after it has received, for example, an ISBN. The aim is to use ISBN as a permanent link to a publication that does not expire even if the publication moves online from one place to another. Example: http://urn.fi/URN:ISBN:978-952-10-6348-0 Here the ISBN is first used as a URN, which in turn has been converted to HTTP URI to enable URN to function as a link on the current Web and with existing applications. The URI above is directed to the URN resolution service operated by the National Library of Finland, which “knows” the actual URL(s) of the publication. (31.8.2011)
