Minutes of hydrographic surveys (ARCHIVES)
Description
The SHOM makes available in digital form its archives of hydrographic minutes (bathymetric and topographical plans) made during its work of measurements at sea since the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day.
It is therefore several thousand documents, mostly in black and white, then in colors from the 1970s.
Note: These documents shall not be used for maritime navigation.
**Format**:
The documents are distributed as an image in JPEG2000 format. The software used by SHOM is Kakadu.
Only a few programs can play JPEG2000 files. Among those commonly used and free IfranView, Gimp, safari..., the SHOM uses and advocates the free visualization software associated with Kakadu Software (www.kakadusoftware.com) kdu_show. It can be accessed at the following links:

JPEG2000 files are very easy to use with the free IGNMap software ([http://ignmap.ign.fr/](http://ignmap.ign.fr/)).
The image is also accompanied by
- A metadata file in xml format containing information about the document;
- A thumbnail image in png format;
- An gml file providing the general geographical coverage of the map.
