Description
This file contains canals and neighbourhoods located within the province of Groningen.
The province of Groningen focuses on the preservation and possibly restoration of landscape and cultural historically valuable canals and neighbourhoods and the associated elements such as abandoned (sluices), bridges, etc. These canals and neighbourhoods are characteristic of the Veenkoloniën, the southern part of the Westerkwartier and some small areas in Westerwolde. Many channels and neighbourhoods have already been muted because they have lost their function. The canals and neighbourhoods are further affected by agricultural use, in particular by the gradual damping of waste material. Because of the lack of maintenance, many districts land. As a result, the peat colonial landscape loses one of its characteristic features. To prevent this, Provincial Environmental Regulation 2016 lays down rules for the protection of the remaining channels and districts and the related supporting elements.
