Federal Agency for Nature Conservation: Recording design of the current marine vertebrate monitoring in the German AEZ (WFS)
Description
The presence of porpoises and important resting and migratory deposits of seabirds in coastal marine areas are determined by planes along flight transects. The BfN carries out aeronautical digital surveys of marine mammals and seabirds in the North and Baltic Seas. These are partly accompanied by analog flights for the evaluation of the data obtained and are used to calculate the distribution, abundances and trends for the assessment of the state of seabirds and marine mammals (mainly porpoises) in the German North and Baltic Sea. Depending on the season and/or location, either marine mammals or seabirds are the focus of the surveys. Based on the experience gained from the long-standing vertebrate monitoring, the maritime areas of the German North and Baltic Sea were subdivided into technically useful research areas for monitoring requirements, and these areas were equipped with specific transect designs. In parts of the bird sanctuary “Eastern German Bay” as well as other areas relevant to seabirds in the German North Sea, these surveys are compacted. In addition, sub-areas of the North Sea with a focus on wintering seabirds are recorded each winter. In the Baltic Sea, the Pomeranian Bay bird sanctuary is recorded in the Oderbank area, with a focus on wintering seabirds. In addition, continuous year-round POD monitoring is carried out in the Baltic Sea. These detect whales in areas with low population density using acoustic detection devices (PODs, Cetacean POrpoise Detectors), which are permanently installed under the water surface. As part of this long-term data collection, the BfN POD operates measuring positions in the FFH protected areas and adjacent waters. The data obtained are examined with regard to the temporal and spatial occurrence of porpoises and their acoustic behaviour.
