Surface Water Quality Indicators: Fitobentos in rivers (2023)
Description
Water quality can be assessed through the biological communities they host. These communities are altered by human activity and the pollution associated with this activity. The study of the flora and fauna found in an aquatic ecosystem, compared to the fauna and flora expected, allows to measure the situation of the ecosystem with respect to pollution.
The biological indicators selected come from the study of the biological quality elements provided for in the assessment of ecological status in the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD), and from the indices selected for each typology in the ESDN, since it is information studied periodically through standardized analyses that allow the collection of annual and quality data.
In the case of inland surface water rivers, the indicator will be configured on the basis of data on phytobenthos and benthic macroinvertebrates, assessed in accordance with the provisions of the CSR for each typology.
In the case of both taxonomic groups, the use of different indices is contemplated according to the typology of river in which it is studied. Despite their different approaches, the expected indices evaluate the river's situation with respect to a pressure, scoring each taxon found according to its capacity to tolerate it. The greater the taxonomic diversity of the stretch to be studied and the greater the number of pressure-intolerant taxa, the better the environmental status of the stretch.
In order to prepare the graphs of situation in rivers through the phytobenthos, it has been taken into account if the indices applied to the analysis of phytobenthos exceed the limit established in the RDSE, between the good and moderate state for each typology of river, or do not exceed it. In addition, typologies with no established legal limit have been registered as ‘No Valuation’.
