Nationally valuable dikes
Description
This file contains scenically valuable dikes located within the province of Groningen. A dike is water-repellent construction, usually raised earth and whether or not covered with stones or asphalt. Intended to protect land behind it from flooding. The province of Groningen focuses on the preservation and possible restoration of dikes that are valuable for landscape and cultural history and the associated elements such as gullies, drinking bowls, denominations and bulkhead sheds. These mainly old sleeper dikes are characteristic of the Eemsdelta, the Oldambt and the Wadden coast area. The old dikes can be affected by agricultural use, in particular by levelling and tearing grassland. The filling and closing of the bowls and drinking bowls, and the breaking down of denominations and bulkhead sheds is also a loss of the characteristic value. To prevent this, the Provincial Environmental Ordinance 2016 has drawn up rules for the protection of the old dikes and the associated supporting elements.
