Results of Nosocomial Infection Control Indicators

The indicators in the Nosocomial Infections Scoreboard reflect the level of commitment of institutions to the prevention of Nosocomial Infections (NI). These indicators shall be public and made available to users in response to a legitimate request for information and transparency. The individual progression of the health institution over several years and its positioning in relation to establishments of the same category make it possible to better approach its overall performance in managing the risk of infection. This comparison can only be made for indicators of the same generation. The achievement of the objectives of the National Programme for the Control of Nosocomial Infections 2005-2008 has led to the development of the initial indicators to make them capable of supporting the more ambitious performance objectives of the 2009-2013 National Programme. It is therefore impossible to compare the indicators of the so-called first generation nosocomial infections dashboard with those of the second generation. Some indicators are evolutions of an already existing indicator while others are creations aimed at strengthening a priority field of intervention. Through its emulation, incentive and accompaniment effects for institutions in the process of progress, the scoreboard aims at the overall and continuous improvement of the quality of care and patient safety The objective of having a comprehensive scoreboard in all health facilities, is achieved with an overall completeness of 99.32% of the scoreboard collection of nosocomial infections. The scoreboard values the institutions most involved and encourages others to make progress. The Directorate-General for the Supply of Care (DGOS) and the High Health Authority (HAS) have adopted the principle of an alternating collection of indicators that have become more numerous. This principle contributes both to reducing the workload of health institutions when compiling indicators and, at the same time, to enabling the improvement actions implemented by them to produce their effects.
