IAS® Advanced Health Indicator: INCIDENCE OF SCABIES
Description
Scabies are a benign disease, but very contagious and very troublesome because of the sharp itching it causes. It can also be the cause of social stigma. It is caused by a small mite, the sarcopte, whose female digs into the epidermis of the galleries to lay there. It has been on the rise for several years in France and Europe, but little epidemiological information is available. Indeed, it is not a reportable disease, and it is not followed by conventional epidemiosurveillance networks. The IAS® Gale published by OpenHealth responds to this lack of information. It allows to follow the spatio-temporal evolution of scabies in France.
The information used is the drug sales data transmitted by the member pharmacies of the Celtipharm network. Pharmacies automatically transmit their information every day. This is anonymous information from sales tickets. More than 4,600 pharmacies transmit this information. Purchases of a selection of drugs are used to build a weighted indicator. The algorithms are derived from those developed for IAS® Influenza Syndrome and IAS® gastroenteritis, whose reliability has been validated by comparison with data from the Sentinelles network.
The information is available in the form of:
— Maps showing yesterday’s situation and the progression of seasonal allergies in France over the last 30 days.
— From a video to visualise the spatio-temporal evolution since 2010.
— From a graph of the national time series since 2010
— A graph allowing the curve of each region to be located in relation to the national curve.
On the maps, the size of each geographical area is proportional to its number of inhabitants (the island of France is therefore very large, isodemographic representation), the color is darker and darker when the allergic phenomenon becomes stronger. A Gale index (boxed to the right of the map) of 100 that the level is identical to that of May-June 2009 (reference period). An Allergy Index of 180 means that there is 80 % more scab than during this reference period.
