Hydrological monitoring of the peri-urban catchment area of Yzeron
Description
The Yzeron watershed (150 km²) is located on the western outskirts of Lyon’s agglomeration. It has been influenced since the 20th century by the development of the city of Lyon. This results in an increase in waterproofing in its urban downstream but also from satellite villages, as well as an agricultural diversion to the forests in its upstream part. The consequences of these developments on the basin’s hydrological regime are complex to understand. However, their knowledge is important to answer operational management and planning questions.
The catchment area has been monitored since 1997 as part of the Urban Hydrology Land Observatory (OTHU) by lrstea (Hydraulic Hydrology-Hydraulic Research Unit UR HHLY) and its OTHU partners. The experimental measurement network managed in this observatory is complementary to the network of operational measurements, consisting of rain stations in Greater Lyon, as well as the hydrometric stations of the DREAL Rhône-Alpes of Craponne and Taffignon on the Yzeron river. The measurements carried out in Irstea are organised on several levels:
— long-term general hydrological monitoring, consisting of rain stations and hydrometric stations in streams and sewerage systems, spread over the entire watershed
— more detailed follow-up on two small sub-basins of a few km², the Mercier and the Chaudanne, where specific experiments are also carried out over limited periods of time.
