Description
This file contains the woodsingel main structure of the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier in the province of Groningen.
Wood herds, alder’s herrings, hawthorn hedges and woodwalls are line-shaped plantations with trees and/or shrubs. In the case of wood-rings, the composition of trees is varied, alder rings consist mainly of alder and hawthorn hedges from hawthorns. These elements often form boundaries of parcels or are partitions with a different function, originally usually as livestock. Two types can be roughly distinguished: plantations on an artificial earth shore (wood roller) and plantations that are at the same height as the surrounding land (woodeningel).
Characteristic of the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier is the enclosed wooding structure and the pingoruines present in it. The woods are under pressure due to scaling in agriculture and the lack of adequate maintenance. The pingoruits are at risk of losing their value by, among other things, deep ploughing, levelling and discharging ground.

For the development and maintenance of the woodsingel structure in the Southern Westerkwartier, a distinction is made in sub-areas. The following categories are distinguished, retaining girdles, healing girdles, (re)development girdles, conversion girdles for agriculture, conversion girdles for nature and passive management. Rules of the game have been drawn up for each category.
In order to protect the characteristic wood-singel structure and the pingoruines present in the Southern Westerkwartier, Article 4.38 rules are laid down.
