Description

Launched in 1982, the inventory of Natural Areas of Wildlife and Floristic Ecological Interest (ZNIEFF) aims to identify and describe sectors with high biological capacities and good conservation status. There are two types of ZNIEFF: ZNIEFF type I: sectors of great biological or ecological interest; ZNIEFF type II: large, rich and unmodified natural complexes, offering important biological potentialities. The ZNIEFF inventory gradually covers the entire French territory (Metropole, nearly 15000 zones: 12915 type I and 1921 type II, Overseas, terrestrial and marine environment). A national modernisation (updating and harmonising the method of drawing up this inventory) was launched in 1996 in order to improve the state of knowledge, standardise the criteria for identifying ZNIEFFs and facilitate the dissemination of their content. 2004, nearly 2000 ZNIEFF have been modernized and validated nationally in 3 regions (Limousin, Normandy, Champagne-Ardenne). This inventory has now become one of the major elements of nature protection policy. It must be consulted in the context of spatial planning projects (urban planning document, creation of protected areas, development of departmental career plans, etc.).
