Description
The establishment and regular updating of a national base of protected areas is essential to meet national, Community and international challenges in the monitoring and evaluation of nature conservation policies. Such a database must contain reliable, up-to-date, homogeneous and standardised information and be a national reference for the various players, from the local to the European level.
Since the early 1990s, the Natural Heritage Department of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN-SPN) has, at the request of the Ministry in charge of ecology, been responsible for managing knowledge about protected areas. The MNHN-SPN thus implements (develops and administers) the "database of protected areas" and responds to its coherence at the national level.
This reference base is ultimately intended to integrate all types of spaces, for which data can be mobilized, and ensuring protection or management of the natural heritage (regulatory, contractual, land protection, or designation under European or international conventions and commitments). Natura 2000 sites are not included in this national base as they are the subject of a specific programme managed by the MNHN.
