Description
The database shall contain the spatial shapes of the NUTS regions and their associated names and codes. The NUTS (Nomenclature des Unités Territoriales Statistiques) codes introduced by Eurostat aim to provide a common basis for territorial breakdown in the collection of regional statistics in the European Union. Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Commission, which established the common classification of statistical units (NUTS), entered into force on 11 June 2003. The nomenclature of NUTS codes is a hierarchical classification of statistical regions.
Based on the classification of NUTS codes, the economic territory of the European Union is divided into three statistical levels: NUTS I - the largest region with an administrative function; NUTS II - medium-sized statistical region, ranging from 100000 inhabitants to 10 million inhabitants; NUTS III - the smallest region, mostly also an administrative region.
Estonia is not subdivided into smaller groups on the basis of NUTS I and NUTS II. The NUTS III level groups the counties into groups as follows:
EE001 Northern Estonia - Harju County;
EE004 West-Estonia - Hiiu, Lääne, Pärnu and Saare counties;
EE009 Central Estonia - Järva, Lääne-Viru and Rapla counties;
EE00A North-Eastern Estonia - Ida-Viru County;
EE008 Southern Estonia - Jõgeva, Põlva, Tartu, Valga, Viljandi and Võru counties.
